Description
The blue whale — the largest animal in Earth’s history, reaching 33m in length and 200 tonnes in mass — is encountered regularly in the productive waters of the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral summer. This aerial photograph, made from a research helicopter at 50m altitude with full IAATO permission, captures a large adult at the surface during the characteristic 30-breath surface interval before a dive, its full body length visible against the Southern Ocean surface. The research zodiac alongside the animal provides an unambiguous scale reference — the boat is 5.2m long. The photograph has been used in marine biology publications, conservation communications, and the natural history collection at the Natural History Museum, London.
