Belfast Titanic Quarter — Harland & Wolff Cranes

Samson and Goliath — the two Harland and Wolff gantry cranes that rise 96 metres above the Belfast Harbour — are the most visible industrial heritage landmarks in Northern Ireland and the symbol of the city’s shipbuilding history that produced the RMS Titanic, the RMS Olympic, and the HMHS Britannic. The cranes remain operational for ship repair and maintenance work at the yard, and their yellow lattice structure dominates the skyline of the new Titanic Quarter development on the Queen’s Island. This image was made from the dockside of the Titanic Quarter at 8am in winter light: the two cranes fill the frame vertically from the waterline dock to their peak, the new Titanic Belfast museum building — designed in the form of the Titanic’s hull bows — visible at the crane base. Shot on a 24-70mm zoom at f/11, the full crane height and the museum architecture are preserved in the frame.
