Description
Lake Louise in Banff National Park is one of the world’s most recognisable mountain lakes — its impossible emerald colour produced by glacial rock flour suspended in meltwater that selectively reflects green and blue light. In mid-winter the lake surface freezes to 90cm depth, but a brief period in early November exists when the lake has frozen yet a thin meltwater layer on the ice surface creates perfect reflection conditions. This photograph exploits that narrow seasonal window — the frozen lake acts as a mirror for the Victoria Glacier and the surrounding mountain cirque, while the warm amber light of the setting sun catches the glacier face and the Fairmont Chateau’s fairytale silhouette against the treeline. The composition required careful positioning to balance the scale of the glacier face above with the reflective pool below, creating the image’s characteristic vertical doubling effect.
