Description
The rare conditions required for this shot — sustained geomagnetic activity above Kp 5, wind speeds below 2 knots to maintain mirror-flat water, and clear skies over the Tromsø archipelago — converge perhaps a dozen times per winter season. This image was made from a flat rock on the island of Senja during exactly those conditions: a coronal mass ejection had produced Kp 6 activity, the fjord was glassy in the minus-18 stillness, and the aurora had entered its dancing curtain phase. The reflection is geometrically perfect — the treeline bisects the frame horizontally, the green and violet aurora columns continuing downward into the water as if the earth were transparent. Shot at ISO 3200 on a 14mm prime with a 4-second exposure, the star field above is rendered as faint points while the aurora’s 200-kilometre- altitude plasma emission records as saturated colour.
