Description
The Athens Acropolis is illuminated each night by a lighting system designed by Elisabeth Chilton that emphasises the warm Pentelic marble of the Parthenon against the blue-violet sky of the post-sunset window — the blue hour being the optimal photography period when the sky retains enough brightness to reveal the city behind while the artificial lighting is at its maximum relative intensity. This image was made from the Filopappou Hill viewpoint — the elevated position directly west of the Acropolis that provides the broadest context shot — at 22 minutes after sunset, when the sky-to-monument light balance was optimal. The Parthenon columns and the smaller Temple of Athena Nike are both illuminated; the Piraeus harbour and the Saronic Gulf are visible as dark water 14 kilometres in the background. Shot on a 70-200mm zoom at f/8 with a 4-second exposure to smooth the wind disturbance in the vegetation foreground.
