Description
The Asaro Mudmen of the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea wear elaborate clay masks and clay- covered bodies in a tradition originating from a legendary battle defeat where warriors used mud and ghost mimicry to frighten enemies. The clay masks — each unique, featuring elongated faces, prominent teeth, and abstract decorative elements — are made from river clay and take several weeks to construct and dry. This photograph was made with the assistance of a cultural liaison and full community permission during a non-performance context — the morning preparation period when masks are donned for a cultural gathering. The morning highland mist at 1,800 metres altitude creates a naturally atmospheric backdrop that enhances the mythological quality of the subjects. The photograph was made using only ambient highland diffused light — no flash, which would have flattened the mask surface texture.
