Description
The Arctic fox’s summer coat — the brown-grey replacement for the winter white that provides camouflage in the snow-free tundra — creates the paradox of an animal that is least camouflaged during the period when it is most photographed. In the Norwegian High Arctic’s brief July-August bloom season, the fox moves through a landscape of remarkable colour diversity — the purple saxifrage, yellow arctic poppies, white arctic cottongrass, and pink thrift creating a wildflower mosaic that contrasts strongly with the fox’s warm brown-grey coat. This image captures a breeding adult at a foraging location on a hillside above the tundra pond, the surrounding wildflowers at peak bloom creating a soft-focus colour background that frames the fox’s direct gaze at the camera. Shot at 200mm f/4 with the background at a distance producing full floral bokeh.
