Emperor penguin colony photography from low-altitude drones represents one of the most challenging and ethically demanding aerial wildlife photography contexts — the drone must operate below 30 metres to resolve individual birds while maintaining a distance that does not disrupt the critical winter breeding huddle. This photograph was made during the austral winter at a permitted research colony site on the Weddell Sea sea ice, using a low-noise drone protocol developed with Antarctic wildlife biologists to minimise disturbance. The image shows the full oval huddle geometry from directly above — approximately 5,000 male emperor penguins incubating eggs on their feet during a blizzard, the huddle’s characteristic oval shape maintained by the continuous movement of birds from the exposed windward edge to the sheltered interior. The black backs of the birds and their golden ear patches create the distinctive colour texture of the huddle surface. The blizzard conditions render the sky as a uniform white above.
