Ant Mandible Detail — Leafcutter Soldier at 10:1

349.00 $

A leafcutter ant soldier’s mandibles photographed at 10:1 macro reproduction — the serrated blade edges of the mandibles resolved at a scale that reveals the individual tooth geometry used for fungal garden defence and leaf cutting.

Description

Leafcutter ant soldier mandible photography at 10:1 reproduction requires optical stacking — the depth of field at this magnification is measured in microns, necessitating 40 to 80 individual focus positions to cover the mandible structure from tip to base. This image is a composite of 60 focus-stacked frames made using a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at maximum magnification on a precision focusing rail. The mandible’s serrated tooth geometry — each tooth approximately 0.1mm in height, arranged in a primary series of 8 teeth with a secondary series of smaller intermediate teeth — is rendered with the clarity of an electron microscope image but in full colour and with the aesthetic character of photographic light. The golden-amber chitin of the mandible structure, the surface micro-texture of the cuticle, and the joint articulation between the mandible and the head capsule are all resolved.
