Albanian Bektashi — Tekke Interior Portrait

649.00 د.إ

A dervish of the Bektashi Sufi order in an Albanian tekke — traditional white turban and felt cloak, the interior of the 18th-century tekke shrine room behind him, candle flames and ornate calligraphy panels visible.

Description

The Bektashi order of Sufism — whose global headquarters are in Tirana, Albania — maintains a tradition of contemplative practice that incorporates elements predating the Ottoman period of conversion. The tekke (Sufi lodge) of the Bektashi in Tirana is both an active place of worship and a historical monument. This portrait was made in the shrine room of the main Bektashi tekke with the babas’ permission during a non-ceremony period, the subject a senior dervish in formal tekke dress: the white felt kuliha turban and the dark felt cloak (abba) of Bektashi spiritual rank. The shrine room interior — gilded calligraphy panels, candles, and the specific ornamental vocabulary of Bektashi visual culture — frames the portrait with architectural context. Shot at f/2.8 on a 50mm prime in available candlelight and window illumination.
