Pivot irrigation systems — the large rotating sprinkler arms anchored at a central water point — inscribe perfectly circular fields into the rectilinear township-and-range grid of Kansas agriculture, creating an agricultural landscape of extraordinary geometric contrast: circles within squares, curvilinear within orthogonal, biological time within engineered space. This high-altitude aerial, made from a research aircraft at 3,000m, captures several thousand square kilometres of the Kansas high plains at harvest time — the gold of ripe winter wheat, the brown of harvested fields, and the dark green of late-season pivot-irrigated corn creating a colour palette that is simultaneously natural and industrial.
