Description
Inspired by Hubble Space Telescope imagery of emission nebulae, this photograph was created by releasing four different pigment inks simultaneously at precise calculated points in a shallow water tank, then photographing the diffusion interaction from directly above as the inks established their own boundary dynamics. The violet, crimson, gold, and deep blue pigments interact according to their diffusion coefficients and surface tensions, creating a naturally-occurring structure that closely resembles the emission nebulae of deep-space astrophotography but is
created entirely at bench scale. The image has been exhibited alongside NASA imagery in science communication contexts. The download includes both standard and extended panoramic crops of the same capture session.
