Description
Upper Svaneti in the Georgian Caucasus preserves medieval tower architecture — the Svan defence towers built between the 9th and 12th centuries as family refuge points during clan conflict — and the combination of living inhabitants and medieval built environment creates a portrait context of extraordinary depth. This image was made at the Pilpani village tower cluster near Mestia — the best-preserved tower group in the region — with an elderly Svan man who has lived his entire life in the tower house’s shadow. His dark grey Svan felt cap (the distinctive headwear of the region), his deeply weathered face, and the direct engagement with the camera communicate self-possession in his ancestral context. Shot on a 50mm prime at f/4, the two towers behind are sharp at the working distance required to include the full tower height in the frame above the subject.
