Description
El Capitan’s 900-metre vertical granite face is the largest exposed granite monolith in the world, and has defined rock climbing history since Warren Harding’s first ascent in 1958. The Valley floor reflection pool — a series of shallow meadow ponds along the Merced River accessible from the Valley floor trail — provides one of the few locations where the complete face of El Capitan can be captured in a still-water reflection. This photograph was made on a calm September morning when overnight temperature inversion fog was still drifting through the Valley floor while the upper walls were clear and catching the first warm light from the east. The reflection pool’s surface was disturbed only by a single temperature-triggered ripple during the 90-second window of optimal conditions. Half Dome’s profile is visible in the gap between El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks, providing the complete iconic Yosemite Valley landmark set in a single frame.
