Description
The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995 created one of the world’s most studied and most photographed wildlife recovery stories, and the Lamar Valley became the primary viewing site for wolf activity. This photograph, made in February from the Lamar Valley road at 400m range using a 600mm lens, captures seven members of the Lamar Canyon pack travelling in the single-file column formation characteristic of wolf travel through deep snow — each animal stepping in the track of the one ahead to conserve energy. The winter palette — graphite-grey wolf coats against white snow, the tan of the distant elk — creates an image of spare, northern beauty that communicates the ecological significance of this flagship conservation success.
