Made from a specially equipped research aircraft with written authorisation from the Volcanological Observatory of La Réunion and the French DGAC during an inter-eruptive period, this nadir photograph looks directly into the 150m-deep Dolomieu crater of Piton de la Fournaise — the most active basaltic volcano in the world by eruption frequency. The concentric lava benches left by historic eruption episodes, the active degassing vents emitting pale sulphurous plumes, and the orange-ochre mineral staining of the crater walls are resolved in exceptional detail. This is a
