A classic 1970s Land Cruiser on the Salar de Uyuni during the shallow-water reflection season — the vehicle and its occupants reflected perfectly in the 5mm-deep brine layer, the altiplano sky doubled in the water mirror.
Description
The Salar de Uyuni at 3,656 metres altitude on the Bolivian altiplano is the world’s largest salt flat — 10,582 square kilometres of compressed salt crust that in the November-January rainy season floods to depths of 5–20mm, creating the perfect mirror effect that makes the Uyuni one of the world’s most photographed natural features. This image was made during the optimal reflection window when the water depth is between 3–8mm — too deep for dust to disturb the surface, shallow enough for the white salt crust to show through the water in clear sections. The classic Toyota Land Cruiser — the standard overland vehicle for Uyuni tours — has been positioned in open salt away from the tour traffic lines, the vehicle and the four travellers on its roof reflected without distortion. The image required a low-angle position with the camera 10cm from the water surface to achieve the maximum reflection geometry.
