Description
The Tehran Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world — a network of interconnected covered streets, caravanserais, and speciality halls extending over 10 kilometres through the southern historic city. The brick-vaulted ceiling system of the Qajar-period main thoroughfares incorporates regular oculi — circular openings in the vault apex — that admit vertical light shafts at specific times of day, the light columns populated by the suspended particulate of a working commercial environment. This image was made in the spice section of the bazaar (Bazar-e Attaran) at 3pm when the winter sun angle produces a 45-degree shaft through the oculus directly above a saffron and dried fruit merchant’s stall. The light column illuminates the display from above while the surrounding bazaar section remains in the ambient vault-filtered light. Shot at f/4 on a 35mm prime, the shaft’s intensity and the surrounding shadow create the image’s tonal drama.
