Description
The Sydney Opera House’s roof structure — Jørn Utzon’s system of pre-cast concrete chevron segments assembled into spherical triangle vaults — is the defining architectural image of Australian identity and requires specific photography positions and light conditions to communicate both the structural system and the waterfront context. The Circular Quay ferry position provides the canonical view: looking east toward the Opera House from the western ferry terminal, the full east facade facing the harbour with the Harbour Bridge and CBD to the left. This image was made from the Manly ferry departing Circular Quay at 7:15am in the brief window when the rising sun illuminates the opera house’s east facade directly while the bridge is still in morning shadow. Shot on a 70-200mm zoom at f/11 from the ferry deck, the reflection of the shell rooflines in the harbour water adds a second geometric study below the horizon line.
