Description
The wild snow leopard is among the most difficult large cat subjects in wildlife photography — a naturally secretive animal in one of the most physically demanding mountain environments on Earth, living at elevations between 3,000m and 5,500m in the Himalayas and Central Asian ranges. This photograph was made during a 12-day expedition to Hemis National Park in Ladakh, India, by a photographer with extensive local knowledge of individual cat territories. The snow leopard — identified as the female known to researchers as Mirga — was photographed at 4,400m on a granite ridge at a range of 120m using a 600mm lens. The clarity of the high-altitude atmosphere and the clean granite background create exceptional image quality for a genuinely wild subject.
