Description
The Simien Mountains UNESCO World Heritage Site presents one of the most dramatic mountain escarpments in Africa — a dissected plateau edge where the Ethiopian highlands drop in near-vertical cliffs of 1,000 metres to the lowland plains of the Tigray region. This image was made from a position at the Ras Dashen escarpment edge at 3,900 metres, the cliff edge dominating the frame foreground while the hazy lowland plains extend to the horizon 3,000 metres below. Gelada baboon troops — endemic to the Ethiopian highlands — graze the alpine meadow foreground, their familiarity with park rangers making close approach possible. The morning cloud layer below the escarpment is beginning to burn off, the tops of secondary ridges emerging through the white. Shot at f/8 on a 24-70mm zoom balancing the sharp foreground baboons against the distant vertical drop.
