Description
The Serengeti sundowner is one of safari photography’s most reliably produced scenarios — the stop for evening drinks in the field at a location chosen for the sunset view, the vehicle positioned as a silhouette against the sky. This image was made at a private conservancy bordering the Serengeti’s western corridor, where the lion pride that regularly uses the acacia grove at the property’s northern boundary was visible resting 50 metres behind the vehicle. The combination of the vehicle silhouette, the pride’s visible shapes in the fading light, and the Serengeti sky at its most saturated creates the visual language of East African wildlife safari photography at its most distilled. Shot at 1/100 second on a 70-200mm zoom at f/5.6, the sky’s saturation is preserved while the lion shapes and vehicle are readable as silhouettes against the ambient golden-orange glow.
