Description
The Mara River crossing during the Serengeti Great Migration is one of the most dramatic wildlife events on earth, and the helicopter aerial perspective provides the only view that comprehends the full scale of the event — thousands of wildebeest simultaneously in the water, on the approaching bank, and already on the departure bank, the river itself appearing as a dark ribbon through the mass of animals. This photograph was made from a helicopter at 80 metres altitude during a peak crossing event at the Serengeti’s Mara crossing point. The aerial perspective reveals the extraordinary density of the crossing — the river surface between the banks is completely covered with wildebeest, their heads and backs visible as a continuous mass. The dust raised by the approach herd on the northern bank creates an atmospheric depth haze. Crocodiles are visible as dark torpedo shapes in the deeper pool below the main crossing point.
