Description
The poppy seed capsule’s dispersal mechanism is a masterpiece of passive mechanical engineering — the dried capsule becomes a rattle with the seeds dry and free inside, and the umbrella-shaped stigma disc at the top has 12 precisely sized pore apertures whose geometry meters the seed release rate. In wind, the pod is shaken and seeds exit through the pores in a controlled stream — the pore size regulates the quantity of seeds per plant movement event, preventing all seeds from being released in a single strong wind event. At 3:1 macro reproduction, the stigma disc and its 12 pores are visible in full geometric detail: the radial pattern of the stigma disc rays and the pore positions at the base of each ray space, each pore a precisely circular aperture of 0.8mm diameter. The dried capsule wall’s cellular texture and the remains of the papery bract at the base of the capsule are also resolved in the sidelight.
