Description
The October rut of the Scottish red deer — one of Britain’s most spectacular wildlife spectacles — sees dominant stags establish and defend territories through constant vocal display, physical confrontation, and scent marking. This photograph was made on a managed Highland estate in Sutherland, the photographer positioned downwind on a hill approach at 40m range using a 500mm lens. The stag — a 12-pointer with an estimated 240kg body mass — was captured mid-roar, the neck fully extended, the antler tips spread at maximum flare, and the breath condensation visible as a frost cloud in the cold October air around the muzzle. A defining image of the British wildlife calendar.
