Description
Architectural concrete photography at macro scale reveals the material as a recording medium for the geometry of its forming surface — the concrete faithfully reproducing every wood grain ridge and groove of the formwork boards in reverse-relief as it cures. This image was made immediately after formwork removal from a poured concrete architectural element, the concrete surface still slightly darker from residual moisture, the wood grain impression at its sharpest before weathering begins. Shot with a 70mm macro lens at 1:1 reproduction with a raking sidelight at 12 degrees from the concrete plane, the wood grain impression is rendered in maximum relief — the shadows in the grain valleys creating depth that reveals the full three-dimensional topography of the casting surface. The aggregate particles of the concrete mix are individually visible in the surface, their size distribution communicating the mix specification.
