Description
The peregrine falcon’s hunting stoop — a near-vertical power dive in pursuit of prey — is the fastest natural motion of any living animal, with credible radar-measured speeds of 320km/h documented. This photograph was made using a specially designed camera trap system in collaboration with falcon behaviour researchers at a long-monitored eyrie in the UK Pennines, the system triggered by a motion sensor at the point in the stoop where the bird has reached terminal velocity. At 1/16,000 second flash duration, the wing and tail position, the foot configuration, and the stoop body profile are frozen with complete precision. The aerodynamic efficiency of the peregrine’s stoop body configuration is fully legible for the first time at this capture speed.
