Description
Pamukkale — Cotton Castle in Turkish — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Denizli Province where 17 thermal springs discharge calcium-bicarbonate water at 35°C. As the water flows down the hillside and cools, calcium carbonate precipitates from solution and deposits as travertine, forming the characteristic white terraced pools. The resulting landscape — blindingly white travertine terraces filled with pale blue mineral water against a sky-blue background — is unique in the world. This photograph was made from a hillside vantage point above the main terrace system in late afternoon light, when the warm sun angle gives the white travertine a creamy warmth rather than the flat white of midday illumination. The blue of the pool water deepens to near-turquoise in the shade zones of the terrace walls. The ancient ruins of Hierapolis, the Roman spa city built on the plateau above the terraces, are visible on the horizon.
