Orca Hunt — Herring Ball Carousel

1,199.00 د.إ

A transient orca pod photographed during carousel feeding on a herring ball in a Norwegian fjord — the black-and-white predators visible within the compressed silver fish mass.

Description

Carousel feeding — the cooperative hunting technique in which orca pods use bubble nets and tail-slap stunning to compress herring into tight bait balls — takes place in the fjords of northern Norway during the winter herring migration. This image was photographed from a research boat at 20m range from an active feeding event in Skjervøy fjord, the orca visible both at the surface and as white-bellied forms within the compressed silver fish mass that they were compressing toward the surface. The complexity of the interaction, the speed of the predators, and the compressed density of the herring create a photograph of considerable compositional and behavioural richness.
