The Wahiba Sands (Sharqiyah Sands) of the Omani interior form one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most accessible genuine sand desert experiences — dunes reaching 150 metres and extending 250 kilometres from north to south, with traditional Bedouin families maintaining seasonal presence in the sand system. This image was made from a position behind a desert camp at the Wahiba’s northern edge during the October tourism season, the camp’s white canvas pavilions and the small communal fire in the foreground, the dune face rising immediately behind in the direct orange of the sunset light. The dune surface at this hour shows the cross-hatch pattern of wind erosion at maximum definition. Shot on a 24-70mm at f/8, the camp’s human scale against the dune face communicates the desert’s scale without requiring the dune height to be captioned.
