Description
Muscat’s Muttrah district — the historic port area of the Omani capital — has one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most atmospheric seafront promenades: the Muttrah Corniche curves around the natural harbour for 1.5 kilometres, with the traditional souq and fish market on one side and the harbour filled with traditional wooden dhows on the other. The Muttrah Fort (built 1580, Portuguese period) on the rock above the eastern harbour entrance provides a visual anchor for the complete corniche composition. At dusk — when the last light catches the fort and the surrounding Al Hajar mountain backdrop while the corniche streetlights are beginning to illuminate — the Muttrah waterfront achieves the photographic quality that distinguishes it from other Arabian seafront settings. This photograph was made at 6:30pm in October from a position on the corniche walkway midway along its arc — the angle that shows both the fort and the harbour simultaneously.
