Description
The musk ox defensive circle — where adults arrange themselves in a ring with horns facing outward and calves in the protected interior — is an anti-predator strategy evolved for the Pleistocene carnivore assemblage and maintained through the ongoing predation pressure of Arctic wolves. In East Greenland, where wolf populations have recovered to viable levels, the defensive circle behaviour can be regularly observed. This image captures the full circle formation — 14 adults in a tight ring with horns outward, two calves visible in the inner space between the adults. The wolves that triggered the formation are visible at the left frame edge — three individuals in the watching-and-waiting posture that precedes a probing attempt at the circle. Shot at 1/1600 second at 400mm from a distance that maintains the 50-metre research protocol minimum, the full formation geometry is captured in a single frame.
