Mumbai’s dabbawala system — the tiffin box delivery network — is one of the world’s most studied logistics operations: 5,000 dabbawalas collect home-cooked meals from 200,000 households each morning and deliver them to their recipients at office buildings across the city by noon, returning the empty boxes by evening. The system, operational since 1890, achieves a Six Sigma accuracy rating — fewer than one error per million deliveries — using no digital technology, only a colour-coded marking system and 130 years of institutional knowledge. This photograph was made at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus during the morning unloading of the suburban train — when dabbawalas transfer their loads at maximum speed — using a 50mm lens at a close working distance that required precise positioning to avoid obstructing the flow.
