Description
Mountain gorilla photography in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest requires a full IGCP gorilla trekking permit and a minimum 3-hour forest trek to the habituated family groups that allow photography at close range. This photograph was made at 4m distance from the Nshongi group silverback, with a 70-200mm lens at the wide end, during a prolonged period of stationary foraging that allowed extensive positioning and multiple compositions. The silverback’s direct gaze into the lens creates an immediate, confronting connection between the viewer and the subject — the genetic proximity of gorilla and human (98.3% shared DNA) felt as an almost uncomfortable intimacy.
