Description
Aoraki/Mount Cook at 3,724 metres is New Zealand’s highest peak — a massif of glaciated peaks above the Hooker and Tasman glacier systems in the Southern Alps of Canterbury. The Tasman River valley below the mountain carries the outwash from the Tasman Glacier — the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside polar regions — in a wide braided channel system whose pools provide occasional reflection opportunities at low wind speeds. This photograph was made at 5am from a position on the valley floor gravel fan, at the moment when alpenglow first struck the upper Mount Cook summit from the east while the valley remained in cold blue shadow. The braided river pool in the immediate foreground reflects the alpenglow-touched summit in still water. A 15-minute window exists between the first alpenglow and the flood of full morning light that eliminates the contrast — timing was confirmed using a solar angle calculator app referenced to the specific GPS coordinates.
