Description
The Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s Great Walks — a four-day guided or independent walk through Fiordland National Park that crosses the 1,073-metre McKinnon Pass and descends the Arthur River valley to Milford Sound. This image was made on the Pass descent on a clear autumn day — rare in Fiordland, which receives 6,000mm of rainfall annually — when the full valley was visible from the pass to the sound. The Sutherland Falls, visible on the right valley wall descending 580 metres in three cascades, is the tallest waterfall in New Zealand. Shot on a 24-70mm zoom at f/11, the track itself is visible in the foreground descending through the first silver beech section, the scale provided by a small group of walkers in the track below. The Arthur River is visible at the valley floor, the Mackinnon Pass memorial marker at the frame’s upper left.
