Looking straight up the trunk of a 3,000-year-old Giant Sequoia in Yosemite’s Mariposa Grove — the 84- metre trunk rising from a base circumference of 28 metres to a canopy of autumn gold against pale October sky.
Description
Giant Sequoia photography that communicates the species’ incomprehensible scale requires one technique above all others: the extreme upward vertical shot from the base of the trunk. With a 14mm ultra-wide lens positioned at the root flare of the Grizzly Giant — Mariposa Grove’s oldest specimen at an estimated 2,700 years — the trunk fills the entire vertical frame from bottom to top, the surrounding October canopy of the mixed forest providing seasonal colour in the corners. The sequoia’s cinnamon-red bark, deeply furrowed by centuries of fire resistance, fills the frame’s centre with warm texture. The scale reference is provided by a single human figure standing at the base — reduced to the size of a thumbnail against the 9-metre-diameter trunk.
