Description
Uroplatus phantasticus — the satanic leaf-tailed gecko — is one of the world’s most extraordinary examples of animal camouflage, its leaf-mimicking tail, dermal fringe that eliminates shadow, and bark-matching colouration making it effectively invisible on the tree surfaces it inhabits. Finding this species in the field requires searching by torch at night when the gecko is active — during daylight it is clamped motionless to a tree surface in a posture specifically designed to maximise its cryptic effectiveness. This image was made after a night search located the gecko and the image was made at first light before the gecko relocated — the image reveals the full cryptic display: the gecko is flattened against the bark with its dermal fringe deployed against the bark surface, eliminating the shadow that would otherwise reveal a three-dimensional object on a flat surface. The leaf-like tail is aligned with nearby dead leaves in the bark crevices. Shot at 2:1 macro with fill flash.
