Description
Lake Hillier on Middle Island is Australia’s most famous pink lake — its colour produced by the combined effect of halophilic bacteria, carotenoid-producing algae, and the pink residue of salt-tolerant microorganisms in its highly saline water. Unlike many pink lakes whose colour varies seasonally, Lake Hillier maintains its distinctive pink colour throughout the year. This photograph was made at 300 metres directly above the island, capturing the lake’s complete geometry within its island setting: the oval pink lake at the island’s centre, surrounded by a narrow band of white salt and tea-tree vegetation, then the blue-green Southern Ocean on all sides. The colour contrast between the pale pink lake, the vivid green vegetation, and the deep blue ocean creates one of Australia’s most distinctive aerial colour combinations. The narrow sand spit at the island’s eastern end connects the lake to the ocean shoreline.
