Description
Kirkjufell, the arrow-head peak on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, has become synonymous with Icelandic landscape photography. This photograph captures it under arguably optimal conditions: a KP-5 geomagnetic storm producing a fully developed aurora borealis with distinct ray structure above the summit, while the Kirkjufellsfoss cascade in the foreground creates a natural mirror in its smooth pre-waterfall pool. The exposure was made at 20 seconds, f/2.8, ISO 3200 to balance foreground detail against the rapidly shifting aurora overhead. The green aurora curtain and its nearperfect reflection create a symmetrical portal framing the mountain — a composition that required three separate visits to the location over a single winter season before weather and aurora conditions aligned simultaneously.
