Description
The Japanese tea ceremony — chanoyu, chado — is a choreographic performance of philosophical practice: each gesture of the 4-hour ceremony is defined by centuries of codified refinement, and the preparation and presentation of matcha green tea is an expression of the Zen principles of wabi-sabi, ichigo ichie (once in a lifetime encounter), and mindful presence. The tearoom environment — tatami floor, tokonoma alcove, fusuma sliding panels — creates a photographic space of extraordinary minimalism, where the only light source is natural diffusion through shoji paper screens. This photograph was made with the cooperation of a licensed tea master of the Ura Senke school, using a 90mm Macro lens in near silence to document the chakin cloth folding — one of the ceremony’s most precise and beautiful gesture sequences. The soft shoji-diffused light reveals the subtlety of the green matcha on white porcelain.
