Description
Jaguars are unusual among the large cats in their genuine affinity for water — regularly swimming the wide channels of the Pantanal river system for distances of over 1km when following prey or accessing territories on the opposite bank. This photograph, made from a boat at 8m range at Porto Jofre, captures the male known as Scarface in a mid-channel swim, the body approximately 40% submerged with the massive shoulders generating the powerful swimming stroke. The copper-golden coat against the dark river water, the splash pattern around the body, and the directional gaze all create a photograph of maximum jaguar vitality. This individual is one of the most photographed jaguars in the world and is documented in the Jaguar ID Project database.
