Description
A full humpback whale breach — in which the animal launches its entire body mass clear of the water is one of wildlife photography’s most kinetically dramatic subjects and one of the most difficult to capture with precision. This photograph was made from a zodiac inflatable 80m from the animal in the Silver Bank breeding ground of the Dominican Republic, using a 500mm lens at 1/4000s. The whale is at the absolute apex of the breach — the full body airborne, the pectoral fins extended, the ventral grooves visible, the barnacle encrustation on the rostrum identifiable. The massive water cascade falling back to the surface creates a compositional frame around the airborne body. Available as a large-format fine art print and standard digital download.
