Description

Human fingerprint photography at macro scale for scientific rather than forensic purposes reveals the full complexity of the friction ridge system — the primary ridges with their regular pore pattern (eccrine sweat gland exits at approximately 0.4mm intervals along each ridge), the ridge flow pattern that defines the fingerprint’s class and individual characteristics, and the core and delta features that are used for fingerprint classification. This image was made by pressing a clean finger onto microscopy-grade glass and photographing the print using raking sidelight at 5 degrees from the glass plane — the oblique light illuminating the ridge-pattern oil deposit as a sequence of parallel light bands against a dark background. At 4:1 reproduction, the full fingerprint occupies the frame and the individual eccrine pore openings along each ridge are resolved as small gaps in the ridge line. The core (centre) and two delta features (triangular patterns at the pattern periphery) identify this print as a loop type.
