Description
Nathan Road — the ‘Golden Mile’ of Kowloon — is Hong Kong’s busiest retail corridor, its 3.6-kilometre length lined with shopping centres, electronics stores, jewellery shops, and restaurants whose signage tradition of vertical neon and LED displays has created one of the world’s densest urban light environments. The traditional Chinese neon shop sign — large format, vertical, often multi-coloured — dates from Hong Kong’s post-war commercial boom and is now largely replaced by LED equivalents, though a significant number of neon originals survive in the Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei districts. This photograph was made from a pedestrian footbridge above Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station at 10pm — the peak of the evening retail period — using a 30-second exposure that captures both the static sign colours and the motion blur of pedestrian and vehicular traffic below. The compression of a 200mm telephoto lens stacks the sign planes into a dense colour field.
