Description
The honey badger (Mellivora capensis) is perhaps the animal kingdom’s most remarkable combatant relative to its size — a 12kg mustelid capable of driving lions and leopards from kills and documented surviving bites from black mambas. This photograph captures an individual in the central Kalahari defending a porcupine burrow from the photographer’s proximity — the characteristic defensive posture of turned-out paws, raised hackle, and direct eyeball contact communicating complete fearlessness with unmistakeable clarity. Made from a vehicle at 3m range, the tight framing and direct eye contact create a portrait of animal character of considerable force. The honey badger is identified as a distinct Central Kalahari subspecies and the individual is known to local research teams.
