Description
Ladakh — the high-altitude desert plateau of India’s Jammu & Kashmir — sits at an average elevation of 3,500 metres between the Himalaya and Karakoram mountain ranges. The region’s Tibetan Buddhist culture, its dramatic mountain landscape, and the extraordinary visual contrast between the intense colours of traditional dress and the stark winter white of the landscape make it one of Asia’s premier photography destinations. This photograph was made outside a small village gompa (monastery) near Leh after the winter snowfall — the child emerged from the monastery courtyard wearing the vivid red and orange padded winter clothing traditional in the region, against a backdrop of mud-brick monastery wall and snow-covered ground. The natural morning light in Ladakh’s clear high-altitude atmosphere creates a crispness and colour saturation impossible at lower elevations. No direction was given to the child — the expression is entirely spontaneous.
