Description
The Oodi Central Library (Helsinki Central Library Oodi) opened in 2018 as a 17,000 square metre public institution designed by the ALA Architects practice — its defining spatial quality is the third-floor reading room under a dramatic undulating timber ceiling structure, 100 metres of open floor plan under a wooden wave that rises and falls above the reading tables and stacks. The south-facing glass facade provides views directly toward the Parliament House across Kansalaistori Square, and the winter sun at its low Finnish angle penetrates the full reading room depth. This image was made from the reading room’s eastern end looking west along the timber ceiling wave at 10am in November, the low sun entering at the full glass facade creating dramatic diagonal beams across the reading tables below. Shot on a 16mm ultra-wide at f/8, the full ceiling wave geometry and the floor-to-ceiling glazing are captured in the wide horizontal frame.
