Description
El Capitolio in Havana — the Cuban national government building constructed in 1929 in the neo-classical style influenced by the US Capitol — underwent a major restoration between 2010 and 2017, reopening with the dome’s original gilded stucco work restored to its pre-revolutionary condition. The interior dome photography is one of Havana’s most powerful architectural subjects: the 55-metre diameter dome with its central lantern skylight, the gilded stucco of the restored drum and pendentives, and the replica Statue of the Republic (at 17 metres, the third tallest interior statue in the world) visible below. This image was made from the upper gallery of the dome using a 14mm ultra-wide at f/11, the dome’s full circular geometry visible in the overhead framing. The diamond set in the floor below — marking kilometre zero of Cuba’s national road system — is visible in the marble floor at the base of the statue.
