Guilin Karst — Li River Mist at Dawn

1,099.00 د.إ

The karst limestone peaks of the Li River valley near Yangshuo at dawn — dozens of conical mountains emerging from morning mist above the river, the traditional cormorant fishing rafts creating silhouettes in the foreground.

Description

The Li River karst landscape between Guilin and Yangshuo is one of the world’s most recognised geographical forms — the conical karst towers that appear on Chinese banknotes and have been the subject of Chinese landscape painting for a thousand years. The photographic challenge is reclaiming the scene’s original visual power through timing: this image was made in the pre-dawn window when river mist fills the valley to the height of the karst summits, the peaks emerging as silhouettes through successive layers of atmospheric haze. The traditional bamboo rafts with their cormorant fishing lanterns provide warm foreground colour points. Shot on a 70-200mm telephoto from a raised position on the west bank, the compression of multiple karst layers creates the characteristic depth-upon-depth quality that defines the visual language of this landscape.
